Yeah, I agree with Carlos that there needs to be a variety of choices to ease out boredom, companies do need to provide new and trendy promotional gift items to its clients so they won't become obsolete and outdated by their competitors. Clients tend to pass up with the same promotional giveaway if they already have a dozen of it sitting somewhere in their office or house.

Variety is definitely important as it creates freshness and prevents boredom. But variety should follow a particular theme to give structure to a promotional campaign that you may be running. Variety without careful thinking and hapzardly done will be counter productive.

I agree with you Kayy. Nowaday, the companies face bigger challenge between each others. Everyone would like to be the best to attract consumer. One way to achieve the target by using variety type of promotional gifts.

This means your company should target variety type of customer too. By making a simple survey to your customer is the first step to know better about him and their family interest.

Based on the survey, at least you could analyse who are they and as a result you'll give most suitable promotional gift to them.

I was just thinking there that what needed to be mentioned was who you gave what to and Nicky's comment above has beautifully illustrated my point.
You should save your most costly items for your regular and high spending customer base and the cheaper ones should be dispatched amongst the one time visitors. For example, you wouldn't give a pen to your biggest customer and a laptop bag to someone just window shopping. As Nicky demonstrated there, customers will relate what you give them to how you see them.

The only exception I would say as to when you should give a higher quality gift to a comparatively low spending customer is if you believe the relationship has the potential for increased spending or some other benefit yet to come to fruition.

Or if there's no space left in the promo cupboard and it's time to make room for a whole new batch of goodies. ;)

This blog entry brings up a great point! Having a variety available is essential for the budget of your promotions. If you were to give top of the line gifts to everyone, you'd go broke. Sure, we all appreciate expensive swag, but there have been times I've gotten something nice and thought "Wow, they really overestimated my interest in their company".

At the same time, if I've spent a lot of money with a company, and they simply send out some cheap, dime a dozen gift, I'm a little insulted. I think the best gifts I've gotten have been nice one's to show a companies grattitude for my business. Going even further, I've gotten a couple that were personallized, and that really says something to me!

there is som many different group of people, so, you might want to think that they have different interests. the good thing is that there is also a wide variety of promotional product to choose from, so, it can ensure you always promote your product/brand with the right tools to the right group. In turn, this will result you more success.

promotional gifts can make or mar a product.... if a promotional gift given is a useless/boring/needless one that product and the brand associated with it stays in the mind of the customer.... at later times he will make sure he does not shop for that product or any other products of that brand even if the other products are good.... on the other hand if the same promotional gift is mind-staying i.e the brand name stays in the customer's mind he will look out for the product/company logo whereever he goes and shops thereby increasing the company's returns.....

With the use of various promotional gifts you can test the effectiveness of each thing you put out there. Its a necessary thing to mix up the promotion as you will have repeat customers that are more then willing to advertise for you without knowing it, but need more ways to do so. Everytime you add a different angle to advertise from, you get added exposure.
